PATIENT INFORMATION
Intestinal Obstruction
Symptoms: Abdominal discomfort with distention, insertion of catheter into pouch with NO return of drainage or gas.
At Home:

Try to relax, sip a cup of hot tea.

Take a warm tub bath to relax the abdomen.

Lie prone on the bed with heating pad to the abdomen.

Turn, stretch, gently massage the abdomen, and deep breathe.

Insert catheter into pouch and if still no output after several hours or vomiting, go to the next step.

Call your CIR surgeon and report what is happening and the steps you have done above. He or his staff will advise you of the next steps.

If you are unable to reach your CIR surgeon and still have no output or have severe abdominal cramping, go to the nearest emergency room immediately.
