| The Quality Life Association was organized in 1985 as an offspring of the Continent Ostomy Center in Jackson, Mississippi. In January 1988 the Continent Ostomy Center relocated to St. Petersburg, Florida. Many of the over 400 continent intestinal reservoir patients of Dr. William O. Barnett suggested that such an organization be established to serve as a network of communication. A quarterly newsletter, Horizons, with an international circulation of over 3,000 was initiated to aid in this endeavor. An annual educational and business conference is held each year in an environment of sharing and learning that empowers the group as a whole to educate others to the latest advances in ostomy surgery.
