I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis in my senior year of nursing school. I had only been married for two weeks when I was stricken with an acute onset of UC. After spending six weeks in the hospital, I finally went into remission. I suffered with UC for sixteen years at which time my gastroenterologist talked to me about having my colon removed. I decided to try the J-Pouch. That turned out to be a disastrous decision for me. I experienced more diarrhea and pain than I ever had with UC. I was very limited in what foods I could tolerate. My activities were grossly curtailed. I am a Registered Nurse and I was unable to continue working on the floor providing patient care. I spent the majority of my time in the bathroom or searching to find a bathroom.
After suffering 13 months of misery with the J-Pouch, I converted to the BCIR. My quality of life improved significantly. I am now able to eat anything I want. The only foods I avoid are whole kernel corn, mushrooms, and an over abundance of fruit that contains pulp. I am able to engage in any activity I so choose. I was able to actively return to my nursing career. I am now working in the field of Nursing Informatics.
My husband of 30 years has stuck beside me and given me all the support anyone could ever ask for. I have two beautiful and healthy children and a wonderful son-in-law of 3 years. My daughter and son-in-law will bless our family with our first grandchild in late December.
I feel I have been truly blessed. I thank God everyday for the strength, knowledge and fortitude of Dr. William O. Barnett. I was Dr. Barnett’s 300th patient to have the BCIR. I would be more than happy to discuss the J-Pouch or the BCIR with anyone who is seeking information about these procedures.
