I was diagnosed with Crohn's disease my third year (1984) of college. After dealing with the
disease for several years with limited success, surgery was discussed. I am very fortunate that my
doctor in Tupelo, MS was aware of the work of Dr. Barnett and an appointment was set up for
me to talk with Dr. Barnett.
After talking with Dr. Barnett on the last Saturday in July of 1987, I checked into the hospital the
following Monday and had my BCIR surgery that Wednesday. Dr. Barnett explained that if he found any
Crohn's activity in the small intestine, that he would not be able to do the BCIR; however, no additional
Crohn's activity was found. I am very thankful for Dr. Barnett's knowledge, skills, and the care that
he had for his patients. I am also grateful for the current BCIR surgeons.
I was able to return to school the day after I left the hospital and have had very few problems with
my BCIR. I only have experienced pouch-itis one time that I am aware of. I eat anything that I
want with the understanding that nuts, corn, pineapple, oranges and watermelon will require that I
spend a little more time intubating. I normally intubate 3 to 4 time per day.
At this point, I have not had any additional problems with the Crohns. I know that I have been
very blessed by God and am thankful to Him for blessing me so immensely. I am grateful to my
parents and family who stood beside me during the hard times as well as the good time.
I have been involved with QLA since 1987. I am very thankful for QLA and the support system
that this organization provides. For me, it is wonderful to known others that deal with similar
situations that I do.
I would be happy to talk with anyone further about my BCIR experience or about QLA.
